Artist's Comments

This is a Runic Staff, with the Rune Winner's face carved and burned into the wood, along with the Elder Futhark, and runic formula burned into the length. It is roughly 5'3" tall, and made of Walnut. It has yet to be stained (with blood) and dedicated to it's purpose.

Very nice. I like the rune in the branches very cool idea. I admire your wood work and of course your subject matter. :)

That's wonderful. I only wish that someday I can make a staff half as beautiful as that.

What do you use to burn and carve?

I love that fact that the staff itself is a rune.

I recently cut down some large branches from a maple tree in my yard. I then cut to size a 5'5 piece that is comfortable in my grasp. I've shaved the bark off and now find myself contemplating exactly how to fashion it. I'm considering making a Rune staff or a "totem" styled staff with the faces of the Norse Gods carved length wise. I guess my question is simply this: Is maple a good wood to use for this project or should I try something different? I see that you used walnut. was there a specific reason for your choice? I hope you can get back to me soon with advice.

I have very little experience working with maple. Now Oak, Pine, Cherry, Walnut, Sassafras I have worked a great deal with and have had no problems. Walnut is a tree I had admired while I was a child at my cousins house on a farm which I spent a lot of time at. I found this particular shape (:algiz:) of course appealing. I can recommend these types of wood, only because of my personal experience. Good luck, hope to see it soon!

It's good to know somebody is still honoring the runes with blood. so many people are squeamish these days it really is a pity. Beautiful piece with delicious detail. Off to the rest of your gallery!
